Idiocracy: A Cautionary Tale of What Could Happen to Our Society

What is Idiocracy?

Idiocracy is a 2006 American satirical science fiction comedy film directed by Mike Judge. It stars Luke Wilson as Joe Bauers, a private in the U.S. Army who is selected for a hibernation experiment and awakens 500 years in the future, where he discovers a dystopian society where anti-intellectualism and consumerism have run rampant.

The Film's Premise

The film is set in a future where the average IQ has dropped to 85 and society has become a dumbed-down version of its former self. People are obsessed with entertainment, violence, and junk food. The government is run by celebrities and corporations, and education is discouraged.

Joe, who has an IQ of 100, is initially horrified by the changes that have occurred. However, he eventually adapts to the new society and becomes a successful businessman. He also falls in love with a woman named Rita, who is one of the few intelligent people left in the world.

The Film's Message

Idiocracy is a cautionary tale about the dangers of anti-intellectualism and the importance of education. The film shows what could happen to our society if we continue to value entertainment and consumption over intelligence and reason.

How to Avoid an Idiocracy

There are a number of things that we can do to avoid an idiocracy. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Support education. Make sure that our children are getting a good education and that they are learning to think critically and independently.
  • Encourage intelligent conversation. Talk to your friends and family about important issues. Don't just sit around and watch TV or play video games.
  • Be skeptical of authority. Don't just believe everything that you hear from politicians or celebrities. Do your own research and make up your own mind.
  • Support independent media. Independent media outlets are less likely to be influenced by corporate interests and are more likely to provide a diverse range of opinions.

If we all work together, we can help to create a society that is more intelligent, more informed, and more just.
