Antibiotic Use in Meat Industry Declines, but Concerns Remain
Globally, antibiotic use in the meat industry has declined in recent years. In 2022, over 100,000 metric tons of human antibiotics were used in meat production, a reduction from previous years. This decline is attributed to increased awareness of antibiotic resistance and the implementation of stricter regulations. However, concerns remain about the continued use of antibiotics in meat production, as it can contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The scientific advice, which was subject to a public consultation launched in February, provides an assessment of the risks to human health posed by antibiotic use in food-producing animals and makes recommendations to reduce these risks.
